Yoga against fibromyalgia
Fibromyalgia (FM) is a debilitating condition in which drug therapies are generally effective only 30 percent in terms of symptom relief and 20 percent for the improvement of the function.
Standard care included medications now accompanied by exercise, but a study published in the magazine pain, researchers report that patients participating in a program called, “Yoga of Awareness” showed significantly greater improvement on Symptoms of FM and functionality, compared with patients in standard care program.
Although yoga has been practiced for millennia, only recently have researchers begun to show its effects in people who have the condition.
The “Yoga of Awareness” is contrasted with previous multimodal interventions for FM patients, as it integrates a wide range of techniques based on yoga, including postures, mindfulness meditation, breathing exercises, application of the principles of yoga for optimal adaptation.
The results of this pilot study as a promising preliminary support for the beneficial effects of yoga in patients with FM.
